- The Firm | Evil Wilford Brimley
Season 20, Episode 11 Cue that piano score, it's Tom Cruise lawyering! Modern day audiences know Tom Cruise as an action star, but he's got range people! He likes eating eggs naked. We take on this John Grisham adaptation, directed by Sydney Pollack, this week on the show. I watched The Firm in theaters all the way back in 1993, and I remembered liking it, but not really willing to go back and watch it again. I'm glad we did it for the show, because it was great to revisit the greatness that is the late Gene Hackman. He could read the phonebook and make it brilliant. But that's not all. Everyone is performing at a high level thanks to a smart script and a great director. Plus, Wilford Brimley is a bad dude in this?! Not the Quaker Oats guy?! - Teaching Mrs. Tingle | "Incredibly Zhivago"
Season 20, Episode 10 It's well know that many consider 1999 to be one of the (arguably) best years in cinema with the amount of quality films that came out that year. Teaching Mrs. Tingle was not one of those films, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good...decent...an okay film. As I explain on this episode, I had high expectations walking into that theater over 26 years ago, and when they weren't met I came away from that viewing severely disappointed. But I always thought that maybe I was too harsh. I wanted to give this movie another chance, so we did. Find out what we both thought. - A Perfect World | "I Don't Know Nothin'"
Season 20, Episode 9 A Perfect World is arguably one of Clint Eastwood's best directed films. I said arguably . I know a case can be made for Unforgiven , Million Dollar Baby and whichever one you might love. But there is so much going on screen that it's hard to pull away while watching. In this episode, we have a discussion about the police, led by Eastwood, and there lack of impact within the movie. This story is really about Butch Haynes (Costner) and the little boy, Phillip, and the journey they take, not only on the road, but their personal journeys. The idea that police contingent hot on their tails need to have some kind of impact on the pursuit makes sense, but in reality, that's not their purpose in the story. The police are simply the inevitable ending to this story that Butch is trying to avoid, but he never will. They are merely the dead-end that Butch is driving toward. I love this movie. I hope you do, too. Check out what we had to say this week on the show and also, we've got a new studio set up! - The One | Oh...Those Wigs.
Season 20, Episode 8 I had never seen this film when it first came out in theaters, not out of lack of interest, but it might have been one of those films that simply slipped through the cracks. I can understand why, but then again I think I would've wanted to watch a movie from writers Glen Morgan and James Wong of The X-Files fame. This movie also had elements I usually gravitate towards. The time-travel element has always been interesting to me. It's got action. Who doesn't like Jet Li kicking the crap of himself over and over again. The science-fiction genre is one that intrigues me. Weirdly, it makes no sense that I didn't watch this movie over 20 years ago. So find out what I thought now! - A Walk Among the Tombstones | "You're a Weirdo, Jonas"
Season 20, Episode 7 Matt Scudder is straight up rude to people and he don't care! Liam Neeson takes a break from his late-in-career action movie phase to do this depressing, dreary, gray, rainy, sad movie "A Walk Among the Tombstones." This is becoming a trend for me, where we discuss a film that I know I watched the movie in theaters, but have very limited recollection of what happens in the movie. I remember pieces, but ultimately the mood is what stuck with me from my first watch to this watch for the episode: It was a big bummer. But, surprisingly, it wasn't as much of a bummer as I remembered. Another reason why I like the podcast. I get to revisit films and have my opinion change. I mean, I don't think it changed too much, but enough to make me appreciative to get a chance to see it again. - The Insider | "Wipe That Smile Off Your Face!"
Season 20, Episode 6 Butler breaks my heart in this episode. I loved and still love Michael Mann's The Insider and he thinks it's 20 minutes too long! I mean, you try to show someone a great film and they just don't get it. In all seriousness, of course film, like all art, is subjective, so I while I don't agree with it, Butler's take is a valid one. Even if he's wrong. I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Something we both agreed on was the greatness of the performance of Bruce McGill in the scene when Jeffrey Wigand is being deposed in a Mississippi court. - Waitress | Mmm...Pie
Season 20, Episode 5 There's two things you can't stop doing after watching the movie, Waitress — smiling ear to ear and being hungry for some pie. This indie film is full of great performances, poignant scenes, and overall good vibes (as the younger generations say these days). This is one of those movies which I would point to when someone asks me how important a script is when making a film. Now, this movie isn't a quality watch only because of the script. It really does take a village to tell a great story. But when you start off a project with a strong script, everyone's job because a lot easier. - Buffy the Vampire Slayer | No, Not the Show
Season 20, Episode 4 It's the one that started it all. Kind of. What was once canon, but quickly dismissed as not related to the hit TV show of the same name, Kristy Swanson kicked vampire ass in the early 90s as the original Buffy . So early, it felt like the 80s. It's Buffy the Vampire Slayer! How much did I like the TV show? I named our first dog after it. But I wouldn't have been interested in the show, if it wasn't for the movie. Maybe I would. This film was also one of the first films to introduce me to the idea that actors play different roles. This was the first time seeing Paul Reubens playing a character not Pee-Wee Herman, on his comeback from some legal troubles. (Look it up) Luke Perry actually playing someone not as suave and James Dean-esq as Dylan McKay from Beverly Hills, 90210 . - Now Showing | Captain America: Brave New World
We walked into that IMAX with bad intentions. No way would this be good. The constant reshoots, the hype campaign on overdrive, all those writers, our overall Marvel fatigue, it all added up to an epic terrible watch. We even watched it in 3D! That's how confident we were that it was going to be a waste of our time. And, per the usual, we were wrong. No one is saying it's great, but we're also here to tell you that it's not terrible either. Find out what we thought about the latest entry in the MCU. Anthony Mackie takes ownership of Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World. - Bottle Shock | "You're a Snob, It Limits You."
Season 20, Episode 3 I often quote the line from Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) in the movie, Bottle Shock, upon meeting Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) for the first time. "You're a snob, it limits you." It's a line that has been with me ever since watching the movie. In the episode, I definitely bring it up again, as I always do when talking about this movie. If you like movies about the underdog taking on the big, bad front runner (and a cocky one at that), I highly recommend this indie darling.
