Though Tim Burton is known for his spooky and macabre avante garde style, he never released a true horror film. That is not until the 1999 Johnny Depp starrer Sleepy Hollow. Also starring Christina Ricci and Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman, this horror film tells the classic tale Washington Irving tale of Ichabod Crane in with a few twists that make this movie an exciting and Halloween appropriate dive into the world of Forgotten Horror! Field thinks Butler just can't appreciate good trash in this mess of a horror film with a troubled production. Starring James Marsden, Katie Holmes, and Nick Stahl, this film was written and directed by veteran "X-Files" crew; a fact that's about the only thing Butler likes about this film...oh, that and that scene where "Flagpole Sitta" plays, love that song. We're comin' atcha with a special bonus Halloween episode this year and they're talking...Halloween!...three that is. Halloween III: Season of the Witch — This third entry in John Carpenter's "Halloween" saga forgoes everyone's favorite unstoppable Shatner-masked killer in favor of...Celtic curses, killer robots, and deadly kids' masks? Oh yeah, it's a weird one. Maligned when it was first released, this outlier entry has become somewhat of a cult classic. So get read for one last ride through Forgotten Horror V: A New Beginning!!! Season 18, Episode 9 We're staying home and taking care of the kids with Michael Keaton while we discuss the 1983 film, Mr. Mom , on this episode of Forgotten Cinema. We talk about how this film still largely works even after 40 years. Sure, the stay-at-home dad label isn't as taboo as it once was, but the jokes surrounding taking care of kids, and a house, dealing with juggling family and career is still largely the same. Add to that a fantastic performance by Keaton and the rest of the cast (Terri Garr, Martin Mull, Ann Jillian, Jeffrey Tambor, Christopher Lloyd and more!) and you've got a real winner. But then why is Mr. Mom forgotten? Check out the episode, the Mikes will tell you. Trilogy of Terror We're joined by John Doolan of the You Can't Sit With Us podcast for the premiere of the fourth annual Forgotten Horror! What's in the coffin tonight? The 1975 television horror special Trilogy of Terror starring Karen Black in three (or four) distinct roles and an especially violent Zulu warrior doll. Listen in as we three discuss Karen Black ability to become numerous different characters in three distinct stories. We'll also talk about how surprisingly adult much of the content in the stories is, especially considering that the film came out for TV in the 1970's and, of course, we talk about that infamous killer doll. It's (technically) Wes Craven 's aptly titled Cursed   on this next installment of Forgotten Horror! In this 2005 werewolf film, Christina Ricci  and Jesse Eisenberg  play brother and sister who after a car accident involving a werewolf, start to feel themselves change and have to figure out a way to stop their curse before they become monsters themselves. We discuss how this film is an absolute hot mess; from the writing, to the story, to the pacing. Then we talk about WHY this film is an absolute hot mess, and its name is Bob Weinstein . The film was reshot twice with three different endings, special effects legend Rick Baker was let go from the project, Craven lost out on a directing job he was weeks away from filming, and numerous big named actors pulled out or were cut completely during these massive reshoots and rewrites. We're about to find out as we discuss the 2001 gothic-horror film, The Others , starring Nicole Kidman  and Christopher Eccleston  on the penultimate episode of Forgotten Horror! Listen to the episode as we talk about how knowing the big twist at the end of the film harms this film in many ways, but in other, similar films, such as The Sixth Sense  or Stir of Echoes  (an episode we did way back during season 1) are still infinitely re-watchable, perhaps even more so, by knowing the twist. That being said, this film has great mood, camera work, and acting. Join us as we discuss the 1997 sci-fi horror film, Event Horizon , directed by   Paul W.S. Anderson  and starring Laurence Fishburne   and Sam Neill . We talk about the original 130 minute cut of this film and how, due to a delay in James Cameron's Titanic , this film was moved to fill its release spot, giving Anderson barely any time to finish filming and editing the film. Not to mention that for various reasons, the film's ending had to be reshot as well. Despite the odds, as well as a myriad of other issues with the film, we find this film to be enjoyable and filled with unrealized potential. Forgotten Horror returned for a 2nd season in 2020 with a brand-new slate of four films. We visited iconic horror director John Carpenter and his movie...Vampires? That's the one we picked? We get a little kid friendly this season and pick another remake. We also were full on into the commercial/short film world and one of our favorites for this season and possibly, throughout the shorts we've done was our Evil Dead take. Forgotten Horror II: The Bloody Return! John Carpenter's Vampires We discuss James Woods' role in this film as an action hero as well as his agreement with John Carpenter on how they would film scenes. We also discuss John Carpenter's directing choices in this film and his others and how Vampires was the film that made him decide to keep directing films. And of course, the Mikes go into Daniel Baldwin and his love of two things; cheeseburgers and cauterizing his own wounds. Spotify | Apple | YouTube The House With a Clock in Its Walls We take a look at the 2018 family fantasy film, The House with a Clock in Its Walls , directed by Eli Roth and starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Kyle MacLachlan. We discuss how the film is a homage to some of the classic 80's family adventure movies in much the same vein as Goonies . We also talk about Eli Roth taking on a very different sort of film from his usually bloody adult fair (albeit, still Halloween focused). We will point out fun facts from the production, why we believe audiences might not have a taste for these kinds of films anymore despite the film being very good and who's side that darned window is on. Spotify  | Apple  | YouTube Don't Be Afraid of the Dark On this penultimate episode of the second annual Forgotten Horror, we shine a light on the 2010 Guillermo Del Toro film, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark , starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pierce; directed by Troy Nixey. We talk about how the unknown Troy Nixey, with just about no credentials, found himself at the helm of a major studio production with fairly successful actors. We also discuss the creation of the movie, from its beautiful sets, location, acting choices and the inspirations for the film; both the original 1973 film as well as from author Arthur Machen's dark take on fairy lore. We venture down into the fruit cellar of an old cabin to bring you the final episode of the second annual Forgotten Horror;  2013's Evil Dead , directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Jane Levy. We discuss how original The Evil Dead  creator, Sam Raimi decided on newcomer Fede Alvarez to reboot this iconic horror franchise. We also talk about the lack of Bruce Campbell's Ash character and how that affects the film. We bring up interesting facts about the film's production on a modest budget as well as try to figure out how a film that did incredibly well at the box office, seems to be now forgotten by both audiences and its creators. The third season of Forgotten Horror not only comes with four new movies, but we switch to numbers instead of roman numerals. You know, because there's no rhyme or reason to what we do. It's Forgotten Horror 3: Season of the Scare! This season came about during a time when we took a pause form the short films, so alas, no bonus video to see us making fools of ourselves. Check out our slate of movies for season 3! Season of the Scare Prince of Darkness It's time for the third annual Forgotten Horror! On this first adventure in fear, we take on the 1987 John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness . We discuss the interesting way that the film attempts to blend science fiction and biblical horror. Then there's the fantastic use of practical effects in the film and the way that the film succeeds with it's singular location and tight script. We'll also talk about some of the less than spectacular performances and a cameo that Butler finds to be a little too much. And we agree that the film is rife for a sequel that can also serve as a reboot of sorts without ignoring the original. Spotify | Apple | YouTube 30 Days of Night In Northern Alaska, Josh Hartnett is fighting vampires to protect his small town in 2007's 30 Days of Night , directed by David Slade. We discuss this action/horror film; both the good and the bad. We enjoy the action, the setting, and some of the actors in their roles, but film is plagued by other characters that seem wasted, generic, or just plain useless. Some of the vampire lore that the film attempts to set up also seems to make little sense or contradict itself at times. We'll talk about how the character actions occur only to move the story along and Butler believes that the final act was a big rush job just to wrap it all up. That being said, we thoroughly enjoy the action, and the story presented within the film. It's a decent film that like a vampire victim's neck, has a lot of holes. Spotify  | Apple  | YouTube In the Mouth of Madness Read any good books lately? No? We haven't either because w e're too busy with our next Forgotten Horror film, John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness , starring Sam Neill. We discuss this 1994 horror film — part of Carpenter's self proclaimed Apocalypse trilogy — and talk about how the concept for this film is its strongest point. A writer creating Hell on Earth when everything he writes comes true. The homages to both Stephen King and HP Lovecraft abound in this film as well. Butler is a big fan of the anything goes, monsters from beyond aspect to the film, as well as some abstract, almost David Lynch moments that occur. Though Butler enjoyed the film quite a bit, he agrees with Field that In the Mouth of Madness has story beats that are missing. This could either be from deleted scenes or just inherent to the script which is why before landing on John Carpenter it went through a revolving door of directors. Spotify  | Apple  | YouTube Let's Scare Jessica to Death We talk about the 1971 film, Let's Scare Jessica to Death , directed by John D. Hancock, who got the directing gig for Jaws 2  based on one of the scenes from this film...before he got himself fired from said big career opportunity. We bring up that fact and more as we discuss what we thought of this film. From the odd way they present the vampires in the film, to the poor use of the supporting actors. Butler will lament that although the idea of the film is solid and the attempt at tackling themes of mental health within a horror film is admirable for a film from 1971, everything else is incredibly lackluster and handled in such a muddled way. Field will, of course, disagree with Butler and talk about his respect for a low budget film that goes so far and gets the director a shot at the big show; even if said director does blow it. Butler is probably wrong though, as this is one of Stephen King's favorite horror films. The first Forgotten Horror started, and we're totally guessing here, when one of us said, 'We should do all horror movies for the month of October' and us thinking that was a completely original idea, did just that. The first year we covered five films. It just so happened that there were five Wednesdays in 2019. We messed around with the opening a bit. Added some Halloween-type music. Butler coined his catchphrase "Keep it spooky, y'all" which Field really does think is corny and dumb, but it stuck, so he's not one to argue with consistency. Plus, the idea of doing a weekly short film (commercial at the time) came to fruition with us doing one for when we discussed the 2011 Fright Night remake called "Hey Guy". For out full slate of the first season of Forgotten Horror, check it out below: The Movies of Forgotten Horror: Season 1 Near Dark We sink our teeth into the 1987 neo-noir, western, vampire flick, Near Dark , starring Adrian Pasdar, Lance Henriksen, and Bill Paxton. Written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow. We dissect the film's impact on modern-day vampire films, character motivations and how much control a director may give their actors to shape their characters. The Mikes also discuss how the cinematography and score help to set a very distinct style for the film. Spotify | Apple | YouTube 1408 Forgotten Horror  continues as the we ignore all of Sam Jackson's warnings and check ourselves into the 2007 film, 1408 ,  starring John Cusack and one evil "freaking" room. We discuss the use of lighting and sets to bring the film to life and Field throws out some fun hidden easter eggs in the movie. Butler talks about how the ending to the director's cut version of the film alters its theme and perhaps ruins the development and journey of its one and only protagonist. We'll deconstruct (get it?!) the 2006 animated film, Monster House , directed by Gil Kenan and produced by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg. We go over the role of adults in the film, the unique use of motion capture within the film, and discuss the change in parent's attitudes toward presenting children with content they might find scary.
